- Light
- low light to bright indirect. It will sit happily in a corner no other plant tolerates
- Water
- let the soil dry out completely between waterings. The rhizomes store water like potatoes, so it is fine to forget it for a month, and far less fine to water it weekly
- Toxicity
- toxic to dogs and cats. Not in the ASPCA plant database, but ASPCA Poison Control names ZZ plant among the insoluble calcium oxalate houseplants it takes calls about: the crystals cause mouth irritation and pain, drooling, retching, vomiting and diarrhea. Also poisonous to people (NC State Extension, medium severity)
Toxicity confirmed against ASPCA Poison Control (These Houseplants Can Cause Trouble for Your Pets, 2025); NC State Extension Plant Toolbox.
